Why do you play what you play?

Life is complicated. There's no simple answers to most of our problems, and even if you think there are, there are lots of people who disagree with you. Life is fraught with tension, with situations that require tact and even diplomacy to navigate.

This is one of the reasons I enjoy playing warriors. I enjoy their straightforward approach to problem solving. In the real world, my troubles are usually things that simply can't be dealt with via the application of a gigantic axe to their heads (my bills just refuse to die no matter how much I try and stab them) but I face no such difficulty in World of Warcraft. To me, the game is escapism, a couple of hours in a world where the stakes are larger than life, but the solutions are much more primal and basic. My death knight gets played for a slightly different reason, but it's still based on the idea of escapism. In this case, it's escapism from my own moral code. In the world at large, while I'm somewhat irascible and have been called blunt on occasion (my wife often comments at these moments that it's a good thing I never decided to be a grief counselor) I tend to be reasonably kind-hearted. But my death knight has plagued towns, unleashed armies of corpses to do his bidding, and is in general just a walking epidemic. He's actively cruel and malevolent, and I enjoy playing him for the pure, cathartic release of letting the id out to play for a while. I usually get sick of him in about a week, while I can play the warrior indefinitely, possibly because the well I'm draining to play the DK is a lot less infinite, but I come back when it refills.

There are of course as many reasons to play World of Warcraft as there are people playing it, and as many reasons to make the choice of race and class and faction. But what interests me is what keeps us going with these choices. I chose to play a draenei shaman because that was the only option for an Alliance shaman at the time, but I kept him draenei instead of dwarf or pandaren because I enjoy the lore of the draenei, and because I think dwarves look like their faces were caught in an industrial sock stretcher. I have an idea in my head of how my shaman acts, and it wouldn't work for any other race but draenei.

Similarly I've tried to play other Horde races, but I always come back to tauren. I just can't stay away from them. I've played orc, forsaken, troll, pandaren and blood elf. I always end up going back to the minotaurs, I just like them a lot more. I like their ponderous way of running, the way plate looks on them, the way they don't fit through doors. I like how their horns replace the horns on Tier 10. (Yes, that's seriously a consideration for me.) With transmogrification such a big part of the game for me, I really love how stuff looks with my tauren, and I always come back to it. sell Guild Wars 2 gold

So just in myself, I find aesthetic reasons, game play reasons (I play worgen for both, really, I dig their character model but I also love that crit racial) and even lore reasons (every draenei I play is for lore reasons) for what I play. I play some characters for pure escapism, and others for catharsis, and yet others (my paladins) to try and fight my knee-jerk loathing for the class. Seriously, I have yet to enjoy it, but I keep trying to and that's worth something.

‘Diablo III’ Sales Top 12 Million Worldwide

Considering that Diablo III was one of the most anticipated titles of this generation, it came as no surprise in November when we heard that the game’s sales had already crossed the 10 million mark – and it’s no surprise again that it has since climbed.

In Activision Blizzard’s recent financial report to investors, the company revealed that sales of Diablo III topped 12 million worldwide by the end of 2012. Naturally, Blizzard doesn't plan to let any of that success go to waste.

“The launch of the game back in May had a tremendous impact on Blizzard and our community,” Blizzard sovereign Mike Morhaime told investors last night. “Diablo 3 broke PC games sales records, and as of the end of the year has sold more than 12 million copies worldwide.”

Morhaime went on to promise that Blizzard intends to continue to support Diablo III and its community “aggressively.” Indeed, Blizzard is continuing to roll out patches for Diablo III – patch 1.07, which adds in brawling (as it’s now called), is expected out soon. buy diablo gold

There’s also the matter of an expansion.
In news that isn't quite so good for Blizzard, the report revealed that World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria's subscriber count is now 9.6 million according to internal estimates. That’s down roughly 400,000 from last count.

Overall, Activision Blizzard had a strong 2012 – the company’s best yet, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick claims.

“We are very pleased to report that Activision Blizzard delivered the best performance in its history,” Kotick said. “With better-than expected net revenues, record operating margins and record earnings, and over $1.3 billion in operating cash flow, we continue to set the industry success bar.”

DOFUS Review




Developed and published by Ankama Games, Dofus is a unique MMORPG with a turn-based battle system and cartoonish environment, but it’s mired with frustrating navigation.

Characters are hand-drawn with an anime style. There are 15 classes to choose from, each with a distinguished look and each with a different play style: Enutrof is a treasure-hunting class that increase drop rates; Osamodas rely on summons that fight along them; Panda was, the “boozer” class, use spells that can only be active if the player is drunk or sober. Customizing your character, however, is limited to skin, hair and clothes colour. You can have purple or green skin if that’s your style. But you can’t change your main outfit, but you can distinguish yourself with hats, cloaks and shields.

After creating your character, you will enter Incarnam, a floating continent high above the World of Twelve. Rocks float in the air, and the area is enigmatic. The point-of-view is top-down, and the camera is stationary. Clicking on the ground moves your character to that location, and if you need to get to the other side, you need to click the edge of the map which takes you to the next area. As you head out to explore Incarnam and the World of Twelve, the environment is lifeless. The leaves on the trees don’t sway, the grass is stationary and the rivers don’t run free. We are surprised and disappointed that the environment is not animated. The music is great and appropriate to the atmosphere. Forest areas are calm with flutes and woodwinds, and the battle music is jittery and engaging with strings and horns. The music, however, becomes repetitive.

The user interface was intimidating since everything is crammed at the bottom of the screen. The chat window is located on the left, the mini-map on the middle, and the spell and item hot bars on the right. Below the hot bar are even more buttons that brings up the character sheet, inventory, quest log, etc.

Combat is turn-based and simple to understand. Players have six action points that are used for spells, and three movement points that are used to move in the battlefield. Points are replenished at the start of every turn unless your enemy uses a spell that decreases your action or movement points.

Combat is fun and thought provoking. We played as an Iop, which is the Paladin class in Dofus. It’s possible to spam a specific type of spell, but the same spell won’t be as effective on a different mob. Each spell utilizes a specific element: air, water, fire and earth. Some mobs are weak against fire or resistant to it. You can get this information by hovering your cursor over your enemies.

Combat doesn't feel repetitive as there are a variety of mobs in Dofus and each mob have unique spells and movement points. One annoying yet challenging mob are Tofus, tiny yellow birds that litter the world. They have ten movement points, and they fly away after they attack. As a melee class, trying to pursue a Tofu would work against you so it’s more strategic to move away and bait the Tofu towards you. Evil Sunflowers are the same – but worse as they have ranged attacks. Mobs are usually grouped and rarely alone. Some have two to four varying mobs which can be soloed. There are some that are intended for team play since the mobs are grouped in seven or more. But the more mobs there are, the more experience points you gain.

In every battle, challenges are given to spice up the game play. There are challenges that require you to use all your action points or movement points in all your turns, kill a specific mob first, or avoid getting damaged. Completing the challenge gives you bonuses on experience points, loot and Kamas, which are the game’s currency.buy or sell GW2 gold

After the battle, the pace of the game is severely hindered by slow HP recovery. Sitting down speeds up recovery, but it still takes time, finding myself hitting Alt+Tab to browse the web. To keep the momentum going, you would need a stock of potions and food to replenish your health.

Where Are They Now? The WoW personalities of 2010 and 2011




Quite a few of today's World of Warcraft players first set foot in Azeroth during the Cataclysm era. The years 2010 and 2011 saw gaming in general move into its own, and we began interviewing more and more WoW players and public personalities who were confident and eager to talk about their game of choice.

Are they still playing today in Mists of Pandaria? Many are -- although the exploits of those who aren't are sometimes equally as interesting to hear! Pulverizing WoW MMA fighter Jens "Little Evil" Pulver has been trying his hand at Mists while preparing for his next fights. "I have not been inside a dungeon or raid but I have enjoyed leveling a few characters," he writes. "My hunter is my PvP character, and I try to get in a few games in the evening.
